You've probably put a lot of time and energy into deciding on the perfect home for you and your family. Have you taken the same time to think about the community that you'd like to live in? It's not just a matter of finding the perfect home - you need to find the right one that's located in the perfect neighbourhood.

If you're new to Calgary you'll need to get some help with your community decision. Your real estate agent will be able to provide some information and resources that you can use to track down the right areas. Although most of the sections of the city are desirable locations for a family, there are a few that you'll want to avoid.

It helps if you can make a list of the desired amenities that you'd like to have in your neighbourhood and bring it into your agent. You should also prioritize the items on your list so that your real estate specialist can really get a good idea of the type of community that would work best for you. For example, if you go to the gym 3 times a week and don't want to travel across town to get there, this would be a high priority item. Having a shopping mall close by may not be as important to you and if this is the case it should be put at the bottom of the list.

In order to decide on the best type of neighbourhood take a good look at your current lifestyle habits and your future goals. Do you currently commute to work by car or do you take public transit? If you're riding the rails or taking buses you'll probably want to find a home that's close to a public transit stop. If you drive into work every day you’ll want to have a route that can easily be followed but isn’t jammed up by rush-hour traffic.

Another thing that you may want to consider is your pet. If you have a dog you want to find a pet-friendly neighbourhood. Ask your agent about areas that have dog parks nearby and is known for being a dog-friendly type of community.

By putting together a list you'll be able to form a good idea of what your ideal community would look like. Then, it's just a matter of working with your real estate agent to narrow down your choices, find a few great communities that would work with your lifestyle and then track down the perfect home located in it.
