No More Lawnmowing and Fresh Vegetables to Eat-What a Winning Combination!

If you are ready to retire your lawnmower there's a group here in Calgary that can help you set it to rest while providing you with fresh vegetables right from your own property. This group is called the Leaf Ninjas and it is composed of three friends that had an idea that blossomed. They wanted to start up a local business growing produce but needed land to do it on. Their idea was to find homeowners that would be willing to start up a vegetable garden in their yard that the three would maintain. The idea was formed and took off like a bullet.

Dave Carlton is one of Leaf Ninjas' co-founders and loves his job. He is able to show people how they can get connected back to the origins of food growth to have access to food that is clean and grown right in their yard. The response has been great so far he says and is a win-win situation for everyone.

If people have a yard that they're not using or would like to convert over to a vegetable garden, they'll get some of the freshly grown produce while the rest will be sold to restaurants and farmer's markets around the area. There are currently eight properties that have agreed to this arrangement and they are receiving free food such as apples, strawberries, rhubarb, onions and potatoes.

As a homeowner, you'll be able to look out into your yard and see your own food growing. With Leaf Ninjas working with you, the land you own will become something different and special. You'll be feeding not only yourself and your family, but will also be providing healthy food to others in the Calgary region through restaurants and farmers markets. Here are some of the places where you can enjoy the homegrown goodness of local food that has been provided by the Leaf Ninjas and the homeowners that support their efforts:

  • Gerry Lane Café
  • Boxwood Café
  • Rouge
  • Brasserie
  • Sugo Italian Dining
  • Without Papers Pizza
  • Wild & Raw
  • The Coup & Meet Lounge
  • Bite Grocerteria
  • Old School Emporium
If you own a home and are interested in this opportunity you can contact this group through their website at leafninjas.ca.
